Leather soles have been used for many years and there are a few reasons for that. They are beautiful, comfortable, resistant and long-lasting. Yes, leather soles are usually more expensive, but they’re also the ones that will last you the longest.
For that, they require some care and attention. In today’s post, we’ll give you some cleaning tips for your leather soles. Even if you follow these tips religiously, it doesn’t mean that you will never have to change the soles of your leather shoes, but it will, for sure, delay the appearance of damages that require this change.
1st part – Remove the dirt from the leather sole
Outside or over a trash can, tap the shoes together removing as much dirt and debris as you can. Then, with a dry stiff-bristle leather brush, scrub the sole gently. The goal is to remove dried mud, grass or other caked-on debris. A brush will help you remove the dirt between treads and loosen dirt in places hard to reach.
2nd part – It’s scrub time!
In a container, add some bleach-free dish soap to water. Then, dampen a cloth with the mix and use it to scrub the sole. Avoid letting water contact with the leather. Yes, leather can handle water but too much can be doing more harm than good.
3rd part – Remove all the soap and moist
With a clean, damp cloth, wipe the leather shoes to remove any soap and debris. Set the shoes in a cool, dry place with the soles facing up to dry. Don’t try to accelerate the drying process.

Leather shoes are known for their waterproof capabilities and leather shoe soles prevent you from getting your feet wet on rainy days. Still, you need to be careful! If your shoes and soles get soaked, the first thing to do is to remove them as soon as possible. Then, dry them with a towel and let them air dry. You can also fill them with paper so they don’t lose their shape. Never try to speed up the drying process through heaters or fireplaces, as it can cause irreversible damage to the skin.

Apply Toe and Heel Taps
Eventually, your leather soles will start to show some sins of use and damage. At that point, it’s a good idea to apply toe and heel taps, which are the area of the sole that stays in more contact with the floor. We recommend you to leave this procedure to your shoe repair shop professional.
